Each year on 22 February, Girl Guides and Girl Scouts all over the world celebrate World Thinking Day. It’s a day when Girl Guides and Girl Scouts think of each other and give thanks and appreciation for the international friendship they find in our Girl Scout Movement.
The World Thinking Day theme for 2012 is “we can save our planet” .The aim is to raise awareness of the environment and the impacts our lifestyles and choices have on it, so together we can, as one Movement, speak out and take action to save our planet.
Thinking Day started in 1926 at the fourth Girl Guide/Girl Scout International Conference held at Girl Scouts of the USA’s Camp Edith Macy (now known as Edith Macy Conference Center). The attendees decided that there should be a special day for Girl Scouts and Girl Guides from around the world to “think” of each other and give thanks and appreciation to their “sister” Girl Scouts. The delegates chose February 22 as the date for Thinking Day because it was the mutual birthday of Lord Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy Scouts movement, and his wife, and Juliette Low’s best friend, Olave.
The poorest people in the world are the ones who will most feel the effects of environmental degradation and climate change. Ensuring environmental sustainability is a critical foundation for ending this poverty. Girls and young women of all ages around the world are also differently and disproportionately affected by the consequences of environmental degradation and climate change.
Thank you for choosing to work towards the World Thinking Day patch with your girls. World Thinking Day is a great opportunity to think about Girl Guides and Girl Scouts around the world and, as one Girl Scout Movement, to speak out and take action together to save our planet. Caring for the environment is something we can all contribute to and the benefits of a cleaner, greener and more sustainable world will be felt by every member of the Movement today and in the future. Make World Thinking Day your opportunity to help Girl Guides and Girl Scouts around the world by helping to save the planet we all live on.
