Safety-Wise Checkpoints

By Jessica J., Junior Troop 76
From Misawa Air Base Japan

The way that I got the Bronze Award was by doing a recycling project.   First of all my troop planned what we were going to do, and we decided to do some interviews with people who knew a lot of information about recycling.  The recycling center was a must and we found out about what can be recycled and how.  We then decided to take a step further and look around the base to see what places could do with some recycling bins.  We put a list down of all the public places that needed recycling, such as the beach, inside buildings, other picnic areas, playgrounds  e.t.c.  We found who was in charge of these areas and each GS did a lot of background work before meeting up with the group again.  My troop and I then went to outdoor recreation to see how we could do recycling on the base.  The manager of some of these places was excited about our idea and asked us to provide recycling bins.  This lead to problems because self help would only provide bins for housing,  and who would pick up the recycling?  We then searched for old recycling bins around the base and cleaned them out to use for our project.  We wrote on the bins what was to be recycled and then delivered them to many of the areas we had seen needed help.  We told everyone where to put the recycling near their buildings for pick up.
My troop and I made up some games for a breakfast function to further educate people in recycling.  Everybody said that they learnt a lot and that they would use the further knowledge that they had learned to help the environment.   Did you know you can recycle rusty metals?
My opinion about the project was that I realized how many places need recycling and I try to further help with the recycling everywhere I go.
